Actually, phlegm is dense mucus that forms in the throat causing cough and discomfort. Phlegm is also known as wet cough and if it’s not treated immediately it can cause major infections of the respiratory tract. More precisely, the phlegm has different colors as the result of an underlying disease.
Yellow or Green Phlegm – indicates a bacterial infection
White Phlegm – indicates a viral infection or chronic diseases like congestive heart failure or heartburn
Brown Phlegm – this may indicate the presence of old blood. Some of the bacterial infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia can cause brown phlegm.
Red or Pink Phlegm – this is an accurate sign of blood in your phlegm. Pneumonia, tuberculosis can cause red or pink phlegm
Black Phlegm – this is the result of smoking or fungal infections.
Furthermore, phlegm and mucus can easily be treated, in order to prevent respiratory diseases, with some natural remedies. Certain homemade syrups and fruits are the best bandages for your throat, especially when you are dealing with wet cough (the presence of phlegm in the lungs).
As a child, I was raised by my grandparents. I remember that grandma was often using all sorts of remedies (because there weren’t too many over-the-counter syrups and medicines) in treating any cold or flu symptom, and coughing makes no exception.

- 2 tablespoons of grated ginger
- 2 tablespoons of mallow flowers
- 2 tablespoons of chamomile flowers
- the juice of 2 lemons
- 1 spoonful of cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons of honey
- 250 ml of filtered water
Put the water to boil in a medium-sized pot. When it starts to shimmer, add the ginger, mallow and chamomile flowers and let them boil for 5 minutes. Strain the liquid, let it cool down a bit, and then add the lemon juice and honey. Mix the entire composition then pour it into a hermetically sealed container. Keep the syrup in the refrigerator and consume 1 tablespoon 3 times a day.

You need small amounts of honey, flour, vegetable oil
and some items such as gauze, paper towel, and a band-aid.
Mix the flour with a small amount of honey so that the composition does not stick to your hands. Add a 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and add another small amount of flour. The obtained paste should be applied on a paper towel and then wrapped in gauze. Put the gauze on a piece of duct tape (or stick it with band-aid) then apply on your chest or back and go to bed.
