Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks in the world, and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea.
Origin of Beer
Though there is some early evidence of beer, the first solid proof of beer production comes from the period of the Sumerians, around 4000 years BC. Sumerians even had a goddess of beer, archeologists found an ode in her honor during the excavations in Mesopotamia. Some says, the first beer in the world was brewed by the ancient Chinese around the year 7000 BCE (known as kui). In the west, however, the process now recognized as beer brewing began in Mesopotamia at the Godin Tepe settlement now in modern-day Iran between 3500 – 3100 BCE.
The oldest evidence that beer was brewed in Germany comes from around 800 BC beer amphorae from what is known as the Hallsstattzeit found near Kulmbach. By the second century after Christ, beer was already being traded commercially. But the monks did not brew the beer just for their own thirst.
How beer is made?
Beer is made from four basic ingredients: Barley, water, hops and yeast. The basic idea is to extract the sugars from grains (usually barley) so that the yeast can turn it into alcohol and CO2, creating beer.
The brewing process starts with grains, usually barley (although sometimes wheat, rye or other such things.) The grains are harvested and processed through a process of heating, drying out and cracking. The grains then go through a process known as mashing, in which they are steeped in hot, but not boiling, water for about an hour, sort of like making tea. This activates enzymes in the grains that cause it to break down and release its sugars. Once this is all done you drain the water from the mash which is now full of sugar from the grains. This sticky, sweet liquid is called wort. It’s basically unmade beer, sort of like how dough is unmade bread. Next, the wort is boiled for about an hour while hops and other spices are added several times.
Health benefits of Beer
Moderate drinkers live longer and better than drunks or teetotalers. Beer is perfect for moderate drinking because of its lower alcohol content and larger volume compared with wine or spirits. The truth is that beer is as all-natural as orange juice or milk. Beer is low in calories, low in carbohydrates and has no fat or cholesterol. Beer not only has no cholesterol; it can actually improve the cholesterol in your body. Beer helps you chill. It has high levels of B vitamins, particularly folic acid, which is believed to help prevent heart attacks. Beer also has soluble fiber, good for keeping you regular, which in turn reduces the likelihood that your system will absorb unhealthy junk like fat.
If you’re someplace where you are advised not to drink the water, the local beer is always a safer bet. It’s even safer than the local bottled water. The most amazing beer and health connection is something called xanthohumol, a flavonoid found only in hops. Xanthohumol is a potent antioxidant that inhibits cancer-causing enzymes. It does not give you a beer belly.
